^Refers to only Modern Standard Hindi here. The Census of India defines Hindi on a loose and broad basis. In addition to Standard Hindi, it incorporates a set of other لغات هندية آرية written in ديوناكري including Awadhi، لغة بوجبورية، Haryanvi، Dhundhari etc. under Hindi group which have more than 422 مليون native speakers as on 2001.[3] However, the census also acknowledges Standard Hindi, the above mentioned languages and others as separate mother tongues of Hindi language and provides individual figures for all these languages.[3]

^Hindi and Urdu are essentially the same language, Hindustani. As the official language of Pakistan it is written in modified Arabic script and thus called Urdu. As the official language of India it is written in the Devanagari script and called Hindi.
