The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within *** hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof-read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

Currently 98.83% of the MediaWiki messages and 89.37% of the messages of the extensions used by the Wikimedia Foundation projects have been localised. How can we improve the usability for your language

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin, add the advanced tool bar in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changes . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

Auto wiki browser

I am an administrator from the English Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons. I am hereby asking for the use of AutoWikiBrowser to perform the following changes; image replacement only. At the Commons, we have to replace images before they are deleted. While we do have a bot that works on this task, CommonsDelinker, there are many times that bot fails because of templates or because the files involved are in the SVG format. Could someone help with User Σύμμαχος / кувейтец, or whatever he calls himself

There's a user who goes under the multiple identities of Σύμμαχος and кувейтец who is refusing to allow me to add image File:IQAF Symbol.svg to the article القوة الجوية العراقية, despite the fact that this was the emblem of Iraq's air force for over seventy years. My Arabic is somewhat minimal, and his English is apparently non-existent, but this really would not be a problem in itself, except for the rather uncooperative and unconstructive attitudes which Σύμμαχος / кувейтец has chosen to adopt -- most notably, his complete failure to give any meaningful explanation in any language for the apparently irrational dislike which he has taken to this image. Yes, I was aware of Symmakhos' edit summary; however it is a complete non-explanation, which "explains" absolutely nothing whatsoever as to why the official emblem of the Iraqi Air Force from 1931 to at least 2004 (and some say beyond 2004) cannot be included in the Wikipedia article on the Iraqi air-force. I really don't see what role Symmakhos plays here other than to block needed improvements to Arabic Wikipedia, and he should also be prevented from attempting to confuse people by deceptively adopting two separate aliases (Σύμμαχος and кувейтец).

Something should be done to restrain the malicious / vandalistic tendencies of User Σύμμαχος / кувейтец

User:Ciphers left a message on my User talk page giving up on the matter and telling me to "discuss" the matter with Σύμμαχος / кувейтец, but it was the fact that Σύμμαχος / кувейтец has maliciously and obstructively refused to offer ANY reasonable or specific justification whatsoever as to why the official emblem of the Iraqi Air Force from 1931 to at least 2004 (and some say beyond 2004) cannot be included in the Wikipedia article on the Iraqi airforce which is what caused this problem in the first place (in addition to the language barrier, of course, but the language barrier in itself would not be a major problem if Σύμμαχος / кувейтец had not chosen to adopt a maliciously obstructive attitude). I really think that something should be done to restrain the malicious / vandalistic tendencies of User Σύμμαχος / кувейтец, and he should also be restrained from attempting to confuse and deceive people by using two aliases. Troubles with abuse filter

Hello!

I frequently repair interwiki in various languages by hand (there is some things bot are not trained for). Please, grant me permission to bypass some abuse filters which deter me from changing and deleting interwiki. I get messages إزالة وصلات اللغات when trying to remove incorrect interwiki from قائمة الأرابيكات. At least, please, copy interwiki from en:List of Wikipedias (or delete all interwiki but this) to prevent pollution by bots, urgently. I'm trying to interwiki link all of the various template associated with en:Template:CONCACAF teams, but I can't seem to get the nav template from this wiki to link properly. Hi. As far as i know "Booza"　بوظة is used for Icecream (refer to مثلجات) in general, while "Dondurma" is a turkish word for the turkish ice cream. As i remember too "Booza" also may refer to one kind of alcoholic drink in Egyptian dialect. Wikipedia logo 2.0 text

Hello everyone. Please share and translate this message I will try to keep this simple, to avoid misunderstanding.

As a part of the Vector change, Wikipedia is creating a new logo, which will use open source fonts. After discussion with individual speakers of Arabic and Farsi languages, we've decided to use KACST Office as the font for the Wikipedia logo; in order to maintain consistency. KACST Office seems to best reflect an Arabic alternative to the Linux Libertine font which we are using for the Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, and Hebrew logos.

This font, however, does not contain characters outside the Arabic language,and we've had to modify the logotext to create the word "Wikipedia". Please see below for an example of what the text currently looks like in Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Pashto, and Western Punjabi.

If any of these are not legible or problematic in your language; please comment on the talk page. We will endeavor to accommodate all the projects.

We understand that some wikis may desire to have some more artistic or calligraphic versions of the logo--the Foundation will not actually force any wiki to use any logo they don't wish to. Please note, any "official" version of the logo in a language which uses an Arabic font will be done with the same font as the Arabic Wikipedia, and almost certainly will be KACST Office. If you modify this in any way, it will not be consistent with the registered trademark.

Fair use question

Hi! On the English Wikipedia I uploaded en:File:Air France HQ.png, a fair use image of the headquarters of en:Air France - It is impossible to upload a free image because France does not allow freedom of panorama.

Yes; the Arabic Wikipedia accept Fair use images and follows very similar rules to English Wikipedia. However in your case, the fair use condition of the non-availability of a free replacement is invalid. so the fair use is not allowed in this case. Ciphers, in this case it seems like this image can be uploaded to the Arabic Wikipedia. It is not possible for anyone to take a truly free photo of that building. France does not have freedom of panorama, so the architect has a copyright over any images produced of that building. However in order for an image of a modern French building to be posted, the photographer's license must be a free license (in France the architect has one license, and the photographer another) - In this case it is a CC-BY-2.5. I will proceed to upload the image and post an explanation in English. Remember that no freedom of panorama = not possible to produce a free image of a copyrighted building. I am sorry , but the rationale you provided is not good enough to keep your photo. It is never enough to say that something exist in order to plug a fair-use. Someone wearing a black jacket is not a good reason to have a fair-use , yet, an astronaut wearing the same jacket while he is walking down the moon gives a hell of a good excuse. So you need to show within the text that there is something about this building that worth plugging a fair-use.

Next. Never Never Never ever spam an article with a Latin language text just to keep a fair-use. It seems to me that what is important ( from your point of view ) is the image and not the article. Please don't do that again.

what you are missing is that no freedom of panorama does not always mean not possible to produce a free image of a copyrighted building. A free image can be acquired almost easier than keeping a fair-use here. Just email the french air lines. It has been done before.

I posted text in English because on many less-frequently trafficked Wikipedias it is okay to post English texts to be translated in the local language. In this case, from now on I will post text to be translated onto talk pages and ask people in the embassy to help.

Not only does France not have freedom of panorama, it is not possible to find or produce a free representation of this building. I have inquired about this and have come to that conclusion.

Commons:Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#France explains that buildings with originality have an copyright acquired from the architect. The Air France building has an original/unique design that would be considered to be protected by French architect copyright laws. In addition there is Commons:Commons:Licencing#Works_of_arts.2C_including_architecture.2C_exhibited_in_public_spaces

I initiated the English Wikipedia discussion: en:Wikipedia_talk:Non-free_content/Archive_43#Licensing_of_modern_French_buildings - The architect AND the photographer have two "rights" over the photo. No matter who takes the photo, the architect also has a copyright. This means that photos of French buildings must have a "free" photography license, but at the same time the image is a nonfree image because of the architect license. The building's photo has a "CC 2.5" license from me, the photographer, and a copyright license applying to it from the architect, Valode et Pistre. Because the architect has a copyright over it, the image is nonfree.

You said: "Just email the french air lines." - The airline does not have the copyright. It is the architect, Valode et Pistre, that has the copyright. The commons page says "While architects may have rights to works derived from their work of art, this is not the case of the owners of works of art or buildings, in general."

The architect will not be willing to surrender its copyright to the building; the copyright inherently extends to photographic representations of the building. And your astronaut example: in this particular case I cannot put in a free use building as a substitute for the Air France headquarters. There is one Air France headquarters, and it is located on French soil, and its design is copyrightable according to French law. This case is equivalent to the astronaut with the tuxedo on the moon; it is unique and cannot be recreated elsewhere.

Your regular tuxedo example is like if I was trying to get a photograph of a typical "Carrefour" grocery store. It would be against fair use to use a copyrighted-by-architect photo of a French Carrefour store when one can get another photo of a Carrefour store in another country or a Carrefour store with a non-creative design. But in this case there is only one Air France headquarters available, and that building has a unique design and is located in France.

The article is obligated to show an image of the headquarters and discuss the headquarters. At the same time this image also needs to be uploaded to fair use-accepting Wikipedias across the Wikimedia project. Normally an image of a building would be hosted at Commons and would be simply added to various Wikipedias, with a link to the Commons image. But because of the French copyright status, this image must be uploaded to individual Wikipedias that accept fair use. Adding images and deciding which images are important is an inherent process of improving a Wikipedia article.

But they need to send an OTRS request in order to have the image on the Commons. After I sent them an e-mail asking them to submit an OTRS request, I have not received a response yet.
