u THE WAR IN APRIL. times. Against the British alone 102 had beenused, some of them several times. The Ger-mans had attacked with the greatest courageand had paid accordingly. They had recoveredthe Somme battle-field which they evacuatedin March, 1917, and had pressed their lines alittle nearer Amiens. They had also made aconsiderable dent in the British line north ofthe La Bassee canal. But can anyone think this was the intentionof the German staff? Can anyone imagine thatthe Staff was satisfied? The Kaiser had retiredfrom the picture and the battle had becomeLudendorfs. The obvious meaning of thischange is that the Staff no longer looked forthe immediate decision which had urged themto launch the offensive, or at any rate that theKaiser no longer trusted the inflated promisesof the Staff. The Germans had gained a considerableamount of territory, but had used at least halftheir total forces ; and obviously these were theirbest forces. But the territory had been pur-chased by a lavish
