Arabic descriptions requested for a series of images about Syria from the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen

Hello, ARwiki contributors! Somebody uploaded about 352 images of Syria from the Commons:Category:Images of Syria from Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen. It shows Syria during the 1980s, before the war. Would anyone like to add descriptions in English and/or Arabic?

RfC regarding "Interlinking of accounts involved with paid editing to decrease impersonation"

There is currently a RfC open on Meta regarding "requiring those involved with paid editing on Wikipedia to link on their user page to all other active accounts through which they advertise paid Wikipedia editing business."

Note this is to apply to Wikipedia and not necessarily other sister projects, this is only to apply to websites where people are specifically advertising that they will edit Wikipedia for pay and not any other personal, professional, or social media accounts a person may have.

يعكف فريق البنية التحتية للقراءة التابع لمؤسسة ويكيميديا على تصميم خدمة قوائم قراءة تعمل على أكثر من منصة والتي سوف تستخدم على تطبيق أرابيكا للأجهزة المحمولة. قوائم القراءة تشبه مجلدات الوسوم الموجودة في متصفح الإنترنت الذي تستخدمه. تسمح هذه القوائم للقراء استخدام تطبيق أرابيكا لوسم الصفحات داخل مجلدات حتى يمكنهم قراءتها في وقت لاحق. يشم هذا الأمر القراءة دون اتصال بالإنترنت. لا ينتج عن استخدام قوائم القراءة استحداث محتوى أو تغييره بأي شكل كان.

كي يمكن لمستخدمي التطبيق عمل قوائم قراءة سيتعين عليهم إنشاء حساب وسوف تربط الصفحات الموسومة بهذا الحساب. حيث أن تفضيلات الحساب الخاصة بقوائم القراءة تتزامن بين الأجهزة. يمكنك الاطلاع على ذات الصفحات على عدة منصات محمولة (أجهزة لوحية أو هواتف). هذه هي المرة الأولى التي نزامن فيها بيانات التفضيلات بين أجهزة بهذه الطريقة. نرغب في أن نسمع ما هي بواعث قلقكم وأن نعالجها والتي تتعلق بالخصوصية وأمن البيانات. كما نرغب في أن نبين السبب أن نظام قوائم المراقبة الحالي لا يمكن تطويعه لهذا الغرض.

معلومات أساسية

تولى فريق أندرويد سنة 2016 مهمة وضع قوائم القراءة مكان السمة البسيطة التي تحمل اسم الصفحات المحفوظة. تسمح قوائم القراءة للمستخدمين وسم الصفحات في مجلدات وقراءتها دون اتصال بالإنترنت. الغرض من هذه السمة هو أن نسمح «بمزامنة» هذه القوائم للمستخدمين الذين يستخدمون أكثر من جهاز. بسبب التداخل مع سمة Gather وبواعث قلق المجتمع المتعلقة بذلك، سوف نعلق هذا الأمر لوقت لاحق.

• دعم أكثر من مشروع. طبيعة تصميم قوائم القراءة أنها تشمل أكثر من موقع ويكي أو مشروع. أما قوائم المراقبة فهي مربوطة بمواقع ويكي بعينها. بينما أنه كانت ثمة نقاشات عديدة لجعلها تشمل أكثر من موقع ويكي، إلا أن القرار في هذا الشأن لن يكون في وقت قريب.

w:en:Lake Szelid contained a mistake: the area of the lake is actually 0.8 km², not 3.6 km². We just fixed the page to contain the correct data. It seems though, that several translations of the article, including بحيرة سيزلد have copied the wrong area. Please fix your article.

New print to pdf feature for mobile web readers

New print to pdf feature for mobile web readers

The Readers web team will be deploying a new feature this week to make it easier to download PDF versions of articles on the mobile website.

Providing better offline functionality was one of the highlighted areas from the research done by the New Readers team in Mexico, Nigeria, and India. The teams created a prototype for mobile PDFs which was evaluated by user research and community feedback. The prototype evaluation received positive feedback and results, so development continued.

For the initial deployment, the feature will be available to Google Chrome browsers on Android. Support for other mobile browsers to come in the future. For Chrome, the feature will use the native Android print functionality. Users can choose to download a webpage as a PDF. Mobile print styles will be used for these PDFs to ensure optimal readability for smaller screens.

The feature is available starting Wednesday, Nov 15. For more information, see the project page on MediaWiki.org.

Call for Wikimania 2018 Scholarships

Hi all,

We wanted to inform you that scholarship applications for Wikimania 2018 which is being held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 18–22, 2018 are now being accepted. Applications are open until Monday, 22 January 2018 23:59 UTC.

Applicants will be able to apply for a partial or full scholarship. A full scholarship will cover the cost of an individual's round-trip travel, shared accommodation, and conference registration fees as arranged by the Wikimedia Foundation. A partial scholarship will cover conference registration fees and shared accommodation. Applicants will be rated using a pre-determined selection process and selection criteria established by the Scholarship Committee and the Wikimedia Foundation, who will determine which applications are successful. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

  • Based on community discussions, the ArticlePlaceholder will soon be deployed on Urdu and Estonian Wikipedias.
  • Statistics
    • January 2018 brought us 9,770,248 edits, 445,027 new items were created.
    • The number of users that edited Wikidata per day grew in 2017 from 2439 to 2672 users, 9,6% more compared to 2016. The number of edits by them grew with 18% to 190k edits per day. We also get edited by 542 IP adresses per day, 50% more than in 2016.
    • In 2017, Wikidata got edited by 46 various bots per day, executing 334k edits per day (63% more than in 2016). The most active bot in 2017 was Emijrpbot, who added 18 million edits to Wikidata.
    • 284 million statements now contain references, compared to 67 million at the start of 2017. The average number of statements per item grew from 5 to almost 9. 73 million qualifiers are now used to provide more details for statements, 13 million in early 2017.

• Welcome to the 300th Weekly Summary!

The weekly newsletter was started by Lydia at the very beginning of the Wikidata project, even before the first deployment, to keep the community informed about the developments, the new projects and tools. More than five years later, the newsletter is still there, its content powered by the community, and sent every week all along the years. I wanted to say a warm "thank you!" to each person who helped filling the Weekly Summary <3

Over the past years, as you know, Wikidata has grown a lot. More data, more tools, more editors and reusers, more exciting projects led by the community. The Weekly Summary has evolved with us, and the 300th edition seems a good moment to ask you all your suggestions about the newsletter, how it could continue evolving, and how you would like to improve it.

On that purpose, you can find a feedback page to express all your ideas about the Weekly Summary. We're very interested to know more about your reading habits, the parts you're more or less interested in, the new topics you would like to share with the community. Thanks in advance for filling it.

• • The Wikidata Query Service is an infinite source of amazing data and one of the best ways to explore and use Wikidata. (TweetsFactsAndQueries)
  • QuickStatements is a powerful tool that can edit or add Wikidata item en masse, via a text editor or importing a spreadsheet. (Éder Porto via Facebook)
  • Mix'n'match (manual), which helps us to interlink Wikidata with the rest of the web and the world :-) (Spinster, Siobhan via Twitter)
  • WikiShootMe! allows you to see Wikidata items plotted out on a map and shows you whether they have images or not. (Ham II)
  • Yair Rand's WikidataInfo script adds the QID of the equivalent Wikidata item to the page being viewed (on sister projects), along with its Wikidata label and description. (Andy Mabbett)
  • Recoin measures the degree of completeness of relevant properties of a Wikidata item and suggests any relevant statements that can be added to the item. (Rachmat04)

يصعب في بعض الأحيان رؤية التغييرات المهمة في اختلافات نصوص ويكي. تبين لقطة الشاشة هذه المأخوذة لاختلافات نصوص ويكي (اضغط عليها كي توسعها) حدوث تبديل في ترتيب الفقرات، إلا أنها لا تظلل حذف كلمة أو إضافة جملة جديدة.

لو فعلت السمة التجريبية الخاصة بـ «⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽»، سوف يتوفر لك خيار جديد. سوف تعرض لك صندوق جديد في الجزء الأعلى من كل صفحة اختلافات. سوف يتيح لك هذا الصندوق اختيار واحد من نظامي الاختلافات على أي حالة تعديل.
